Local Kiddieland shut down
Claiming that the local Kiwanis Kiddieland at Applegate Park had not filed the proper inspection papers, state regulators have closed down the mini-park.
According to published reports, the park, during its 51-year-run, has never filed the proper state inspection papers, or undergone inspections.
The Merced Sun-Star says that for the past half century the amusement area was off the state's inspection radar. Finally, inspectors visited Kiddieland and shut it down, after another facility brought the un-inspected Merced facility to their attention.
The local sponsoring Kiwanis club told media it was unaware of the regulations.

Clean-up continues in Mariposa fire areas
Workers in Mariposa County are going thru the fire-ravaged acreage there in advance of fall rains.
Experts say that "repairs" must be made to make stable some areas of ground. The problem is the lack of ground cover and the great amount of soot and ash on the ground.
When fall rains come, that material can easily be swept into streams. This poses a danger to fish and other livestock and poses an increased risk of flooding.

Two indicted in death of Atwater guard
Two inmates accused of killing and Atwater Federal Penitentiary correctional officer now face charges.
Grand jury records released from Fresno show that the two inmates accused in that stabbing of a guard at the Atwater Penitentiary will now face murder charges; they could be sentenced to death.
The U.S. Attorney General will have the final say as to whether the suspected killers of 22-year-old Jose Rivera will face capital charges.
Rivera died after being stabbed with a homemade ice pick-type weapon in June. Investigators believe 40-year-old Jose Sablan actually stabbed Rivera. He is already serving a life sentence for a 1990 murder. Forty-three-year-old James Guerrero is accused of holding Rivera down during the fatal attack. He has been accused of attacking a correctional officer in the past, but was not convicted. He is currently serving a life sentence for an armed bank robbery.

New air carrier to begin service in less than a month
Great Lakes Airlines has confirmed that it will begin service from Merced Municipal Airport to the Ontario International Airport (in the LA area) on September 3.
Merced has been without commercial airline service since for more than two months. But flights in and out of the city will resume no later than September 8th, under an order from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Officials say Great Lakes will provide service to Merced and Visalia. Airport officials say Great Lakes will start with flights to Ontario International Airport in Southern California but will eventually fly to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.
Both Merced and Visalia will have two nonstop round-trip flights per day with 19-seat turboprop planes, with help from a federal subsidy of three-million-dollars a year.
Meanwhile, Vision Airlines says it intends to go ahead with plans to start service Castle Airport with flights to North Las Vegas and Reno.
Great Lakes has begun an ad campaign to publicize the upcoming service.

Hispanics in majority in Merced County
The latest Census Bureau statistics show that Hispanics are now the majority ethnic group in Merced County.
Hispanics are also in the majority in Madera and Tulare Counties. While they account for 48 percent of the population in Fresno and Kings Counties, if you take the entire valley, Hispanics now constitute 51 percent of the population.
Some observors say that the latest numbers have political punsters wondering how to tap into the vote of that growing "minority-majority" in the Valley. Other polls have found that while Hispanics make up more than 30-percent of the state's population, they only make up about 14-percent of likely voters.
